Kovalchuk expected to bring in good return

Colton Pankiw   ·   18 février 2020
After a five-year NHL hiatus, Ilya Kovalchuk signed with the L.A. Kings during the 2018 offseason. Unfortunately for both Kovalchuk and the team, it never worked out how they had hoped and they agreed to terminate his contract, making him a free agent and leaving his NHL career in doubt. However, the Montreal Canadiens took a chance on the 36-year-old forward, signing him to a two-way deal back on January 3rd, and it is looking like a smart gamble by general manager Marc Bergevin.

With the Montreal Canadiens being 9 points back of a playoff spot, it is clear they will be sellers at the deadline. They have already started that process as they sent Marco Scandella to the St. Louis Blues earlier today. Don’t be surprised to see Kovalchuk moved soon as well. Since joining the Canadiens, he has put up a respectable 12 points in 19 games. Consider that with the fact he is a pending UFA, teams may be inclined to add Kovalchuk to help improve their secondary scoring. In fact, Sportsnet reporter Eric Engels thinks not only can the Canadiens move Kovalchuk, they may be able to bring in a fairly substantial return.

Considering the fact that Bergevin was able to sign Kovalchuk to a two-way deal just over a month ago, this would be great asset management by the Habs. Even though Kovalchuk has certainly won over many fans in Montreal, there likely wouldn’t be many who would be upset with the team if they were able to move him for a second-round pick. They won’t be making the playoffs this year and this pick could really help the team in the future. It is also important to note that Kovalchuk has made it very clear he has enjoyed his short tenure in Montreal, so perhaps he would be interested in returning to the team via free agency this offseason.
