Blues GM says trade plans hinge on Tarasenko's health

Tim Tucker   ·   18 février 2020
The St. Louis Blues are hoping to be the first back-to-back Stanley Cup winners since the Pittsburgh Penguins did it in 2016 and 2017. How GM Doug Armstrong might bolster the team heading into the playoffs this season will depend entirely on the health of one of the team's star players.

Vladimir Tarasenko hasn't played since October 24th after undergoing surgery on his shoulder. He's been skating with the team at practice, but Armstrong says he's not ready to give definitive date for his return yet. However, Taraskeno is expected to play before the end of the regular season and, unless that changes, Armstrong told reporters Tuesday he's only "interested in hockey trades, not rentals."

That would take the Blues out of the race for Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers, unless they could swing some kind of sign-and-trade between now and Monday. Still, there are other players on the market that could suit the Blues needs should Armstrong decide he wants to deal. If Tarasenko suffers some type of setback before February 24th, expect Armstrong to go all-in.

As for Tarasenko, Armstrong says the news is all positive. The 28-year-old winger was a major part of the Blues' Cup run last season and recorded 33 goals and 68 points in 76 games. He had 10 points in 10 games (three goals, seven assists) before being placed on long-term injured reserve in October.
