Several Leafs speak out after embarrassing loss, playoff hopes in jeopardy

Mike Armenti   ·   19 février 2020
Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh was a very forgettable outing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have now dropped their second straight game. The Pens put on a clinic at home, building a 5-0 lead over the visiting Leafs, eventually taking the contest by a score of 5-2. Following the game, the Leafs had plenty to say about their performances of late. None of it was positive.

"Today was a good lesson in seeing the (franchise) that's built championship teams & they haven't really missed a step. Every time they've had a guy hurt they've had another guy coming in & playing their bag off with their effort & their detail," said a very frustrated Frederik Andersen. "It's something we can learn off & hopefully we can use it & learn from it, but we better do it quick"

Head coach Sheldon Keefe was a little less talkative after the embarrassing outing, but seemed to agree with his struggling netminder's sentiments.

"We have to make a decision here about what we want to be as a team. Because we're running out of games."

Surprisingly, it was Jake Muzzin who had the most criticism for his team on Tuesday, after rumours have begun to swirl that Muzzin is on the verge of being extended for four more years in Toronto in the neighborhood of $5.5M per season. You can hear Muzzin's post-game comments below:

With the loss, the Maple Leafs sit at 70 points, just 2 up on the Florida Panthers, with the Cats holding two hand-in-hand, which could potentially push the Leafs out of a playoff spot.

The Buds play host to the Pens on Thursday in the second half of a home-and-home, with a very big two points on the line and they will need to bring a much more well rounded effort to the Scotiabank Arena if they want to have any hope at remaining ahead of Florida in the standings.
