Insider says speculation on Gallant joining the Canadiens unfounded

Tim Tucker   ·   19 février 2020
It's not really surprising that the rumour mill around the Montreal Canadiens head coaching position is starting to heat up. The Habs, who were hoping to stay in the playoff hunt, have lost their last five games and blew a two goal lead Tuesday night in a 4-3 loss to Detroit. One of the names being thrown around is former Vegas coach Gerard Gallant. TSN Insider Darren Dreger says the team has had no contact with him.

"Noticing the speculation around Gerard Gallant and the Canadiens. There’s been no contact. Spoke with Gallant. He and his wife will be in Montreal tonight, but it’s a mini vacation and nothing job related," Dreger posted to Twitter.

It is kind of odd that anyone would choose to vacation in Montreal in the middle of winter, but it's possible that Gallant has ties there. He served as an assistant coach with the Canadiens before taking a head coaching position with the Florida Panthers.

It's also worth noting that if the Habs were planning to hire Gallant, it would break the team's longstanding tradition of hiring coaches that can speak French. Gallant may be a French sounding last name, but he was born and raised in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. If he can speak French he chose not to while doing an interview with a French outlet in 2015, which seems very odd.

For the record, we're not saying Montreal shouldn't hire an English-only coach, it just seems very unlikely that they would. Should they decide to go that route, however, Gallant certainly seems like a good choice. He has plenty of experience and, by all accounts, is great at building relationships with players. However, as Dreger stated, he doesn't seem to be on the Habs' radar, at least not yet.
