Addressing reporters at Madison Square Garden today, Rangers team President John Davidson announced that Chris Kreider and the Rangers have reached a deal on a seven-year contract extension, preventing the winger from hitting the trade or the UFA market. He will make $6.5 million annually.

The man who was supposed to be the biggest prize of the trade deadline, the Massachusetts native has been linked primarily to Boston and Colorado. Kreider has 24 goals and 21 assists, easily on pace to break career highs on both goals and points.

Perhaps more importantly, Davidson announced that forward Pavel Buchnevich and goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin were in a car accident, with both suffering injuries. Buchnevich is supposed to be fine going forward, but Shesterkin will have to be reevaluated for a small rib fracture. Davidson stressed that seatbelts likely prevented further, worse injuries.

UPDATE: Kreider is not practicing with the Rangers today, but according to sources, the contract is not to blame. Kreider is simply sick, as in ill.
