The Buffalo Sabres have announced the acquisition of New Jersey Devils forward Wayne Simmonds. A conditional 2021 5th-round draft pick is heading the other way in the deal.

The Sabres are still within striking distance of a playoff spot in the Atlantic, but it's safe to say that Wayne Simmonds is not the piece that will put them over the top. Not a sleight against Simmonds, but his days of being able to drastically alter the outcome of games is long behind him.

The one thing this move does indicate is that the Sabres look like buyers and not sellers on deadline day and I wouldn't be surprised if they have more pokers in the fire at this point.

New Jersey will retain 50% of Simmonds' salary in this deal. The condition of the draft pick is that if the Sabres make the playoffs and Simmonds plays 10 games, the pick becomes a 4th-rounder. Simmonds has 24 points through 61 games with the Devils this season.
