Maple Leafs didn't make a deadline day splash, but have announced a huge contract extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs may not have been able to make a splash on Monday's trade deadline day, but the Leafs did make a significant announcement on Monday regarding pending UFA defenseman Jake Muzzin.

Per the team's official twitter page, the Leafs have announced that they have come to terms with Muzzin on a four-year deal at $5.625M AAV. This deal is a home-run for Muzzin, who is an undeniable leader in the Maple Leafs locker room. The 31-year-old Muzzin's contract will take him into his 35+ years at a healthy cap hit, keeping him in his hometown for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile for the Maple Leafs, it may have been slightly higher than what the team had hoped to pay for Muzzin, but locking the gritty blueliner up for the next four years gives the club some assurance that the team will retain some leadership, sandpaper and reliable two-way play on the back end through 2023-24.

Muzzin's new deal takes effect for the 2020-21 season, and has $16.8M in signing bonuses attached. He has registered 22 points in 52 games this season.

Despite the fact that the Leafs have struggled this season, they still remain in a playoff spot, likely leading to the decision by GM Kyle Dubas to stand pat, rather than to buy or sell out of panic. There have been a litany of injuries to several key players, specifically on the blueline, which has hindered the Leafs' ability to remain competitive on a nightly basis, being forced to rely on players who may be more accustomed to roles lower down on the depth chart. Perhaps once this team gets healthy, they can begin to tighten up and right the ship ahead of the playoffs.
