Jacob Markstrom injured, will miss weeks

Suddenly, the Vancouver Canucks trading for netminder Louis Domingue makes a lot more sense. Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom is dealing with a knee injury. The team says he will miss three-to-four weeks.

Markstrom, who is having an excellent season with Vancouver and is one of the major reasons for the team's success this year, missed practice on Monday in Montreal. The team initially reported his absence was simply a “maintenance day" but general manager Jim Benning later confirmed during a press conference in Vancouver that Markstrom was absent after an MRI in Montreal revealed concerns for a “lower-body injury.” Markstrom is returning to Vancouver and will be assessed by the team's doctors.

Benning traded AHL goaltender Zane MacIntyre for Domingue on Monday, hoping to fill the void left by Markstrom's injury. Domingue has appeared in 16 games for the Devils this season. He’s also appeared in seven games for their AHL affiliate.

“We were talking on the phone to Domingue thing all morning,” Benning said. “Louis has experience in the league and he’s played well.”

“Other teams have top guys that are out too, that’s just part of the game, it’s part of playing this time of year. So, you know, we’re confident in the depth that we have in different positions to replace players."

Markstrom has played in 41 games for the Canucks in 2019-20, posting a 23-16-4 record with a 2.75 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. Markstrom has been getting chatter about the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie this year and has even been named as a possible Hart Trophy candidate.
