With the Devils taking exception to the hit, Bertuzzi was immediately cross checked high and hard by New Jersey’s John Hayden, falling dangerously to the ice as the official's hand instantly went up.

Hayden would receive a game misconduct and a five-minute major penalty for the hit.

Though coming to the defense of a teammate is more than expected in professional hockey, the NHL seeks to eliminate hits of this nature, which could lead to serious injury.

Thus, disciplinary action didn’t take long, as early Wednesday morning the NHL Department of Player Safety issued Hayden a fine of $2016.13 for the hit, the maximum allowed under the CBA.
