Bouwmeester shut down for the season, but feeling good following ICD procedure

St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, who suffered a cardiac episode on the Blues' bench on February 11th in Anaheim, issued a statement on Wednesday, speaking out for the first time since the terrifying incident, just two short weeks ago.

Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench in the first period of the game and was unresponsive. Medical personnel carted the 36-year-old to the back, and away from the ice surface, where they performed CPR and used a defibrillator to revive him, before rushing the veteran defenseman to the UCI Medical Center. It was there that he would have a procedure done to install an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to help regulate his heart.

Because of the quick actions of the first responders on the scene at the Honda Center in Anaheim earlier this month, Jay Bouwmeester, his family, the St. Louis Blues organization and the rest of the hockey community had a happy ending. Here's what Bouwmeester had to say in his statement:

"I would sincerely like to thank all of the trainers from both the St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks, as well as all of the first responders, the Anaheim medical staff and the team at the UCI Medical Center for their quick actions on Feb. 11. Our family has felt the support of the entire National Hockey League family and the city of St. Louis during this time. We have all been greatly comforted by your genuine concern."

Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Bouwmeester is feeling good, but will need time to evaluate his hockey future. Friedman also stated that GM Doug Armstrong has shut the big defenseman down for the remainder of this season, which was the expectation.
