Last night’s hockey game between the Hershey Bears and the Charlotte Checkers turned scary in a hurry after Bears forward Kale Kessy had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher following a fight with Checkers defenceman Derek Sheppard.

Thankfully for Kessy and all involved, he was able to regain consciousness before leaving the ice, and was said to be “alert and in stable condition” before he was sent to a local hospital. Today, both the Bears and Kessy released statements regarding the incident.

“Hersey Bears forward Kale Kessy sustained an injury during a fight on the February 25, 2020 game. He was transported to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and was kept overnight for observation. The athlete has been discharged this morning on February 26, 2020,” The Bears statement read. Kessy also released a statement of his own, saying;

“I would like to send my heartfelt thank you to Hershey Bears fans for their thoughts, prayers, and support following my injury last night. Additionally, I’d like to thank our trainers, doctors, EMTs, Bob Goodman, and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for providing me immediate and exceptional care. I am feeling better today, and I look forward to rejoining my Hershey Bears teammates soon.”

It is great to hear that Kessy appears to be in good spirits and is okay after what could have been a much worse situation. Despite both teams going to their locker rooms for about 45 minutes during the injury, the game did end up continuing.

As of now, there is no word on how much time Kessy is expected to miss. The 27-year-old forward is a former Arizona Coyotes draft pick, being selected in fourth-round of the 2011 draft. In 24 games this year he has failed to register a point, but has put up 104 penalty minutes.
