WHL FOLLOWS QMJHL'S LEAD, CANCELS REGULAR SEASON
COLTON PANKIW March 17, 2020 |
The Western Hockey League (WHL) has announced that it has cancelled the rest of its regular season. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported the news Monday afternoon.
This comes as no surprise to anybody at this point, as you’d be hard pressed to find more than a handful of leagues who haven’t been cancelled or at the very least suspended operations for the time being due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The WHL followed in the Quebec Major Junior League’s footsteps, as it also announced that the remainder of its regular season was cancelled. McKenzie also noted that the Ontario Hockey League has a meeting Tuesday to discuss what their plan of attack is.
They will also follow the same decision as the QMJHL to proceed with the playoffs based off of the league’s current standings. Because not all teams have played the same amount of games, it will be based off of points percentage. It should be made clear however, that with the uncertainty of this situation, no one knows for sure when or even if the playoffs will happen.
These are certainly odd times, and there are no easy decisions to make for all these leagues worldwide. It is important to remember that everyone is trying to do the best they can to keep everybody safe. The main goal is that this virus can get contained in order for not just sports, but regular life, to pick back up.
