REPORT: ROMANOV MAY JOIN HABS FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON IF 2019-20 RESUMES

There has been a lot of talk recently about whether defensive prospect Alexander Romanov will leave Russia and join the Montreal Canadiens for the 2020-21 season. According to TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun, it may be sooner than that.

LeBrun says he's spoken to Romanov's agent Dan Millstein, who told him "that it's possible, if Montreal wanted, that his client signs with the Habs for the remaining of the season (if there is an NHL season resumption) rather than wait for next season." LeBrun also cautions that re-signing with CSKA Moscow is still an option for 2020-21.

With the KHL cancelling the remainder of its playoffs, it's possible Romanov, Montreal's 2nd round pick in 2018, has played his last game in the Russia-based league. The 20-year-old will officially be a free agent on May 1st unless CSKA Moscow can somehow convince him to sign an extension before then. The KHL does not like to lose their young stars and will likely pressure Romanov to stay as much as possible.

Romanov is known more as a defensive defenceman rather than for his offensive prowess. However, he's put up very good numbers in the last two World Junior Hockey Championships for team Russian, recording eight points in seven games in 2019 and six points in seven games in 2020.
