The Buffalo Sabres have signed Mattias Samuelsson to a three-year, entry-level contract. The 6-foot-4 defenceman was selected by the Sabres in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
Samuelsson has spent the past two seasons playing for Western Michigan University. This season saw him score two goals and add 12 assists in 30 games. He also served as one of the team's assistant captains.
“We are very pleased with Mattias’ growth at both Western Michigan and on the international stage,” said Sabres general manager Jason Botterill. “He possesses a unique combination of size, speed and skill, and we look forward to working with him on his next steps as a pro.”
Samuelsson has represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships two times. His first, in 2019, saw him and his teammates win a silver medal, and this past tournament saw him serve as the team’s captain.
