EDMONTON OILERS CONSIDER THEMSELVES FRONTRUNNERS IN HUB CITY BID

Although there has been rumours about cities like Las Vegas and Vancouver making efforts to become a hub city for the NHL playoffs, most of the discussions so far have occured behind closed doors. Now, the Edmonton Oilers are taking their case public.

In an article by Robert Tyckowski in the Edmonton Sun, members of the Oilers organization share their thoughts on why they feel Edmonton would be a good place for the NHL to restart the season. “We’ve been working diligently with the NHL, the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton on a host bid. We’ve been sharing information on why we believe Edmonton should be right at the top of the list of any NHL city to host the season,” said Oilers senior vice-president of communications Tim Shipton. “By any measure, Edmonton is at the top of the list.”

Amongst other things, he brought up the fact that Edmonton have very low COVID-19 numbers, excess testing capacity and a world class health-care system. Shipton also mentioned the advantageous logistic situation in the Ice District area: “They didn’t think about a global pandemic when they designed it, but it’s definitely a plus. Two NHL sheets of ice and over a million square feet in Rogers Place. We can dedicate space to all 12 teams. And, for hotel space, we have the JW Marriott, which is attached, and adjacent hotels like the Delta and Sutton Place. We would be able to create a world-class, NHL-calibre quarantine space that is all connected. We really think that we have all the amenities and all the features that would appeal to the NHL and NHLPA.”

Edmonton were also able to present a united front with the public support of Mayor Don Iveson and Premier Jason Kenney, something the NHL will likely take note of as they try to avoid political resistance.

Whether or not Edmonton ends up being one of the hub cities is unknown for now, but with them taking their case public, we should not be too surprised to see more cities do the same.
