STEVE YZERMAN MAKES DECISION ON HEAD COACH JEFF BLASHILL

The Detroit Red Wings had one of the worst regular seasons imaginable this year, putting up a pitiful record of 17-49-5 for just 39 points, which easily put them in dead last. The second worst team in the league, the Ottawa Senators, finished the season with 62 points.

Despite the awful season however, general manager Steve Yzerman said today on a virtual press conference that the team will keep Jeff Blashill as the head coach for next season.

“I have no plans of making a coaching change at this time. I think Jeff has done a good job,” he said. “The Red Wings are in a rebuild.”

This season marked Blashill’s fifth as the head coach of the Red Wings. He was able to bring the team to playoffs in his first season, but hasn’t been able to do so since. As Yzerman explained however, the team is in a rebuild which hasn’t given Blashill much of a chance to succeed.

Yzerman also brought up a few other points on the team. He mentioned that the team will have a captain for next season, but did not say when an announcement would be made on who will receive that honour. Despite being in a rebuild, Yzerman did also say he was prepared to do what he can in free agency, although he won’t be focused on making a big splash. Though it will take time, it appears Yzerman has this team on the right path.
