DUCKS GM BOB MURRAY TAKES JAB AT HEAD COACH DALLAS EAKINS

On Wednesday afternoon, Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray spoke on a conference call reviewing his team's 2019-20 performance.

Though most of the comments were fairly standard, he did have one big critique that appeared to be a shot fired in the direction of head coach Dallas Eakins. Murray said he tried to stay out of the dressing room but now feels “that was a mistake (…) Some of the kids were allowed to get away with murder this year, and that’s over. Accountability in this group is going to change.”

The Ducks struggled over the course of the season this year, finishing sixth in the Pacific Division with just 67 points in 71 games. Still, it is pretty unusual to hear a general manager throw his coach under the bus, especially a coach in Eakins who he just hired the previous offseason. Murray did however go on to give Eakins some praise as well.

“I thought he was very well organized, very well-prepared,” said Murray. “I thought the communication was good early. It got off-track a little bit. I think he had to get rid of some of the things that came from Edmonton, and I think those are gone now. He was very, very hard on some young people in Edmonton, and it kind of backfired on him there. I’m not saying it was all his fault, by the way.

I’m saying just that whole situation was kind of (…) and I think he took the foot off the gas a bit with them. I just know he’s going to be much more consistent and on point with things, with everybody next year. He had to get a few of the things out of the way, and he did. But again, we were a decent hockey team a lot of nights. That’s why I expect much more next year, because we showed we can play the game.”

Despite ending his statement with some encouraging words, the first quote mentioned in this article is the one that everyone will talk about. It will be interesting to see how next season goes for the Ducks and whether or not Murray sticks with Eakins if the team gets off to another poor start.
