ARTEMI PANARIN RESPONDS TO CRITICISM FROM RUSSIAN HOCKEY FIGURES FOR TAKING ON VLADIMIR PUTIN

The New York Rangers Artemi Panarin, known for tirades against the government in his home country of Russia, has once again taken to social media to express his discontent. Panarin is making it clear that while he does not approve of Russian President Vladimir Putin, he loves his home country and feels it's important the he make that distinction. Panarin gave his speech in Russian on Instagram, but a translation was provided by Slava Malamud, a Russian sports reporter.

"Hello, everyone. I wanted to clarify my civic stance a bit. Despite the fact that some scum and sycophants are trying to disparage me, claiming that I don't love my Motherland, I'd like to say a few words on that. In reality, my wishes align with the overwhelming majority of my country's population. It's the happiness of our family and friends, and, if it's ever possible, of all people of our country. But there are people who think that these goals are possible to reach within the current system. And I don't," said Panarin.

"And I ask you not to conflate the Motherland with the state! With kind wishes to everyone!"

According to Malamud, Panarin has been "harshly criticized" by some Russian hockey figures recently for speaking out against Putin and the system he has created. This includes former NHLer and current KHL coach Andrei Nazarov, who Malamud said has used the George Floyd protests and the police crackdowns on them to shame Panarin "to the tune of 'How is your beloved America working for you right now?'" Malamud states Panarin's Instagram video is a direct response to Nazarov's comments.
