FORMER FIRST-ROUNDER NILS LUNDKVIST MAKES DECISION ON NEXT SEASON

Nils Lundkvist, a former first round pick of the New York Rangers, has decided he won't be coming to North America for the 2020-21 season. The 19-year-old, who was chosen 28th overall by the Rangers in 2018, has signed a new one-year deal with Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League. He's been suiting up for the team since 2017-18.

Lundkvist, a defenceman, had an impressive season in 2019-20, managing 11 goals and 31 points in 45 games. He was named the Fjallraven Young Player of the Year last season, which is awarded to the best young player in Europe by the Alliance of European Hockey Clubs.

"We have discussed back and forth about the future, where the agents did most of the work. And I have come to the conclusion that it feels best for me to stay another season in Lulea Hockey," Lundkvist said in a news release on the team's website. "This means that I will be able to accumulate even more experience until the day I cross over. Also, if you look at the state of the world right now, this feels best to me."

Lundkvist won the bronze medal with Team Sweden at the Wold Junior Hockey Championship in 2020. He had one goal and eight points in seven games. He's described as a mobile puck-moving defenseman who likes to make quick decisions and join the rush.
