CALGARY FLAMES TRIED TO TRADE FOR FIRST OVERALL PICK IN 2013

For the past five seasons, Sean Monahan has been one of the Calgary Flames' best players. The sixth overall pick from the 2013 draft has been alternate captain for the Flames for five straight seasons, and has scored a total of 194 goals and 217 assists in 541 games in Calgary.

According to Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet however, the Flames tried to acquire the first overall pick in the 2013 draft - a pick that turned out to be Nathan MacKinnon. Calgary offered the Colorado Avalanche their sixth, 22nd and 28th pick to Colorado, but as we know, Colorado turned it down.

It is interesting to speculate in how getting Nathan MacKinnon would have affected a Flames team that has been frustratingly close to becoming a full fledged cup contender in the past few years. Monahan has been a core player for the Flames group, but he has not been a game changer in the way MacKinnon has.

The Flames trade suggestion in the 2013 draft did not go through, and the players drafted 22nd and 28th, Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk, do not only have yet to make an impact in the NHL, none of them are even in the Flames organization anymore.

The Calgary Flames will face the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 2020 playoffs, and Flames fans will be hoping the team finds some consistency. If they do, they will be a team to be reckoned with.
