FLAMES USING TRAINING CAMP AS A PLAYOFF TRYOUT

This year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, which are set to begin in late July, will see teams have 30 players on their roster. For most teams, these extra players are there in case of injury or suspension, as generally players that were with the team during the course of the regular season will continue to play in the playoffs.

That may not be the case for the Calgary Flames this year however, as general manager Brad Treliving said Friday that his team will determine how players play in training camp, which are set to begin July 10, to decide who will suit up in the playoffs.

“We’ve got 30 guys, whatever it is, coming to camp, and because of the uniqueness of the situation, camp is important,” Treliving said. “The top 20 play. This isn’t one of these things where (you say), ‘OK let’s take the first third of the season and see where everybody goes.’ I don’t care if you played in Stockton (the Flames AHL affiliate) or if you played 10 games here or if you played 70 games here. Can you help us beat Winnipeg? If the answer is yes, then you’re in.

“This isn’t a development camp. This is a get-ready-to-get-into-the-playoffs camp.”

This will certainly help bring up the intensity in the Flames training camp and will likely help the players get back into game shape much quicker. Whether or not Treliving means what he says or is doing it to motivate the players is unknown, but it is certainly interesting nonetheless. The Flames are set to play the Jets in the opening round. They had very similar records this season, as the Jets finished with 80 points in 71 games played, while the Flames had 79 points in 70 games played.
