PLAY BY PLAY, COLOUR ANALYSTS TO WORK REMOTELY DURING PLAYOFFS

If the NHL is to return later this summer, the only production staff that will be in the building will be for television and radio broadcasts. Both play-by-play announcers and colour analysts are likely to be working remotely.

“It’s different,” vice president of Sportsnet and NHL production Rob Corte said. “A lot of the energy they draw is from within a building and the crowd. When you’re in an arena you see everything. There’s going to be things that will be missed or not seen just because it’s not available to their eyesight.”

Corte also mentioned that there will likely be one feed produced for each game and given to all NHL rights-holders. Sportsnet will have their commentators watching the games in Toronto, where a score bug and graphics will be added.

“Part of the challenge is, there’s been so many different ideas and potential ways to do this,” said Corte. “We’ve been having so many discussions, and when you think you’re moving in a certain direction, then about ten more questions come up that actually disqualify everything you have been thinking before.

“That’s probably been the frustrating part.”

This will be a difficult task for both the play-by-play announcers and colour analysts as, like mentioned above, there will be stuff that happens behind the play that they will not be able to see. This could cause some confusion on the broadcasts, so it will be interesting to see how they go about it. There are many questions right now, but one thing is for sure; this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs will be like nothing we have ever seen before.
