FREDDIE FREEMAN AND SALVADOR PEREZ BOTH TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19

All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman was one of four Atlanta Braves players to test positive for the coronavirus, manager Brian Snitker revealed, according to Dave O'Brien of The Athletic on Saturday.

Freeman has a fever and Snitker said that it's "going to be a while" before the team is able to get him to camp.

Will Smith, Touki Toussaint, and Pete Kozma were the other three players to test positive in the MLB's first round of testing. Kozma is dealing with symptoms, while Smith and Toussaint are both asymptomatic.

The Kansas City Royals announced Saturday that catcher Salvador Perez tested positive for COVID-19, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic.

The six-time All-Star signed off on the announcement and he's in good spirits, Lewis added.

In addition to players testing positive, Braves first base coach Eric Young Sr. has elected to sit out the shortened campaign because he is considered to be at a high risk for contracting the virus. DeMarlo Hale will take his place.

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA announced Friday that there were 38 positive tests for COVID-19 during the league's first set of mandatory examinations.

Thirty-one players and seven staff members tested positive, which equates to 1.2% of the total 3,185 samples taken.

Among MLB teams, 19 feature at least one player who tested positive during the first phase. The Oakland Athletics haven't completed their testing yet, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The numbers are encouraging for MLB with its regular season scheduled to begin July 23. The positive rate of COVID-19 in the National Basketball Association was 7.1%, according to Sports Illustrated's Emma Baccellieri.
