CORY CONACHER LEAVES THE NHL AFTER BEING EXCLUDED FROM BOLTS' BUBBLE ROSTER

While technically still under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, 30-year-old forward Cory Conacher has decided to play hockey in Europe after being left off of the Bolts' 31-man bubble roster for the return of the 2019-20 season. Lausanne HC of the Swiss National League has announced the team has signed Conacher to a three-year contract that starts in 2020-21.

This will not be Conacher's first stint in the National League. He played 48 games for SC Bern in 2015-16 before returning to North America the following season. SC Bern won the National League championship while he played for them.

Conacher was never drafted, instead signing as a free agent with Tampa Bay in 2012-13 after completing his college career and playing for a couple of AHL teams. Following that, Conacher had contracts with Ottawa, Buffalo and the New York Islanders before returning to the Tampa Bay organization after his first stint in Europe. Much of his time in the NHL was spent in the minors, playing just 193 regular season NHL games over the course of his career.

Conacher's small size may have worked against him in the NHL. However, at just five-foot-eight and 180 lbs, Conacher put up 28 goals and 75 points in his 193 career games, but could never find a regular NHL roster spot.

"We are very happy with Cory's arrival in Lausanne," said Petr Svoboda, the club's Director of Hockey Operations. "He is a very talented and experienced player, who brings leadership to our team. He has already had success in the Swiss championship. We are delighted to be able to count him among us."

Lausanne also announced the signing of Brian Gibbons Tuesday. Gibbons is currently under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes but, like Conacher, was not included in the team's bubble roster. Gibbons, 32, signed a one-year deal. He has more than 200 games under his belt in the NHL, including 15 with Carolina this season. He's spent much of his career in the AHL but , other than Carolina, has played games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators.
