DALE WEISE ADDRESSES RUMOURS OF A CONTRACT IN SWITZERLAND FOR NEXT SEASON

Montreal Canadiens forward Dale Weise is outright denying rumours that he's already signed a contract that would see him leave the NHL next season to play in Switzerland's National League. Le Matin, a French-language daily newspaper out of Switzerland, reported that the 31-year-old had an agreement with Lausanne HC and would finish out the Return to Play program for 2019-20 and then join the team.

"There is no agreement, Weise told Montreal's La Presse after the outlet picked up the story. "I'm here and I'm focused on the playoffs. I am 100% aiming for a return to the National League next year, I want to play well in the playoffs and I want to sign a new contract with the Canadiens."

His agent also confirmed to La Presse that, right now, there are no plans in place for next season.

Weise is currently on the final year of a four-year, $9.4 million dollar deal he signed with Philadelphia as a free agent before being traded to Montreal for his second stint with the team in February of 2019. Since his return to the Habs, he's spent much of his playing time with the Laval Rocket of the AHL. As for how the rumour of him signing in Switzerland got started, Weise says he has no idea.

“This is fake news . People need to find things to talk about. I saw an article go by two weeks ago that said that [Michael] Frolik and I were going to Europe. It came out of nowhere," he told La Presse.

Not only is Weise hopeful to get a contract renewal with Montreal, he and his wife have started a business for mothers there, something he says is a sign of how committed he is to the city.

"The pandemic delayed us, but we have been fully operational for a month," Weise explained. We're trying to navigate the pandemic. We made a serious investment in our business. We wouldn't have done it if we didn't like the area."
