CAPITALS GOALIE ILYA SAMSONOV INJURY OCCURRED DURING NHL PAUSE

Earlier in the week, it was confirmed that Washington Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov was going to miss some time due to injury, though no one knew when the injury occurred or how long he’d remain out of the lineup.

On Friday, the Capitals said that the 23-year-old Russian netminder was injured in an off-ice incident during the NHL pause. Unfortunately for the Caps, he will not return at all during the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs. The good news, however, is that he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2020-21 season.

This is an unfortunate ending for what was a very solid rookie season for Samsonov. He appeared in 26 games with the Capitals this season, posting a 2.55 goals against average, along with a .913 save percentage. He was selected by the Capitals with the 22nd pick at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, and early on appears to be living up to the lofty expectations. With long time starting goalie Braden Holtby’s contract set to expire after this season, it appears likely that Samsonov will be the team’s number one goaltender headed into next season.
