#WESKATEFOR INITIATIVE TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENTS DURING NHL POSTSEASON

NHL players will have helmet decals showing support for social justice movements during the postseason, which begins Saturday. Players will be able to customize their own “#WeSkateFor” helmet decals and sweaters with the person or movement they are representing.

The initiative is aimed at honoring frontline workers and the Black Lives Matter movement.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told NBC News, “We believe in terms of focusing on the need to combat racism and to also pay tribute to the responders from the medical community of COVID-19.”

In addition to the decals, “#WeSkateForBlackLives” will be displayed on the seat coverings and digital screens at Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Place.

Evander Kane is the co-head of the Hockey Diversity Alliance and spoke out against the NHL’s initiative.

“The NHL can put ‘Black Lives Matter’ all over the rink, shout ‘Black Lives Matter’ from the mountains,” Kane said. “No matter what they do or say, it’s all going to fall on deaf ears with me and every other person in the HDA because the league has made no effort to support its own Black players.”
