We all know it, the summer of the Maple Leafs GM, Kyle Dubas, is not easy, since he has to manage the cap space of his team for next season.

Having released veteran Patrick Marleau on the last draft, by doing a transaction with the Carolina Hurricanes, Dubas managed to save $6,25M.

Toronto's main project, however, remains its young free forwards with restrictions, mainly Mitchell Marner.

Here is the latest information on the Marner file.

However, contrary to what one might think, the $6M that was released by Marleau's departure was not necessarily used to sign Mitchell Marner. According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, it seems that Kyle Dubas has agreed on the terms of two contracts, with forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson. Here is what these contracts would look like:

-Kasperi Kapanen (22 years old) : 3 year contract, with an value of $3,2M

-Andreas Johnsson (24 years old) : 4 year contract, with an value of $3,4M

Although there is an agreement between the Toronto GM and the two players, no signature has yet been affixed and the whole thing is still not official. The reason is very simple, the Maple Leafs await the outcome of the Mitchell Marner file. Contracts will not be finalized until Marner signs the contract in Toronto or elsewhere.

Kapanen is a 1rst round Maple Leafs pick (22nd overall) at the 2014 draft. In his first "full year" (78 matches) in Toronto, he scoared 20 goals and added 24 assists, for a total of 44 points.

Johnsson, Toronto's seventh-round pick (202st overall) in 2013, had an almost identical season, scoring 43 points (20 goals and 23 assists) in 73 games.

It remains to be seen who from Marner, Kapanen, and/or Johnsson will be back in Toronto next season, but we must admit that it would be surprising to see all of them at the Maple Leafs camp next season.

To be continued…
