Markov’s agent reaches out to Montreal

july 18, 2019
Blogger and sports radio contributor Andrew Zadarnowski says Andrei Markov’s agent has reached out to the Montreal Canadiens about a possible return to the team. He tweeted today that the agent spoke to the Habs’ main scout and asked that they pay attention to the defenseman, at least “out of respect for him.”

Markov played just 10 games shy of 1000 for the Canadiens, the only NHL team he’s ever played for and the one that drafted him back in 1998. His departure from Montreal was low-key, despite his loyalty to the team. It was announced in June of 2017 that he would not be re-signing with the Habs for the upcoming season. Two days later, he signed a contract with the KHL's Ak Bars Kazan.

According to Zadarnowski, Markov wants a $2 million, one-year contract to return to North America.

That said, he also states there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of interest from Montreal, or any other NHL team for that matter.

Markov had a great first season in the KHL, putting up 33 points in 55 games. Ak Bars Kazan would go on the win the league title. However, he showed major signs of slowing down last season, posting just 14 points in 49 games. He could sign a professional try out contract with any NHL team, but there’s no indication that’s what he wants. It remains to be seen whether the Habs or anyone else will take a chance on the defenseman, who turns 41-years-old before the end of 2019. In his 990 games with Montreal, Markov posted 119 goals, and 572 points.
