Rumour: Detroit attempting to trade for Brayden Point

july 18, 2019
An NHL blog is reporting that contract talks between Brayden Point and the Tampa Bay Lightning are breaking down. As a result, it cites a source as saying a trade could materialize between Detroit and Tampa Bay that would see Point head to Michigan. No word right now on what the return might be.

There is an interesting connection there, as Steve Yzerman, the current GM of the Red Wings, served in the same position for Tampa Bay for 8 years, stepping down in 2018.

Point had a big season last year. The 23-year-old centre scored 41 goals and 51 assists in 79 games. He is currently a restricted free agent and was rumoured to have turned down an offer sheet attempt from the Montreal Canadiens just a short while ago. Besides Detroit, the blog also states the Ottawa Senators and the Habs are interested in making a trade for Point.

Wherever he ends up, Point has cemented himself as a top-line player and will likely land a big contract. A trade should result in a hefty return for Tampa
