Gardiner could sign with an Eastern team

july 21, 2019
The case of defenseman Jake Gardiner, who is still looking for a contract for next season, is still not settled. However, for the first time since the opening of free agency, his name is coming up in rumors.

According to what the site HockeyFeed reports, Gardiner was going to be very patient before accepting an offer from any other team than the Toronto Leafs. However, he must wait to see how much Mitch Marner signs for before he can sign himself, and there's no real hope that there will still be money left for the Ducks' 2008 first round.

In a recent article by Chris Ryan, journalist for the Devils NJ Advanced Media ,he mentioned that the 29-year-old could stay in the East, but not the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to his information, New Jersey Devils' GM, Ray Shero, would be interested in the left-handed defender. Shero would like to solidify the left side of his defense and he still has $18 million in cap space to sign an impact player. While PK Subban should play on the first pair in New Jersey, Gardiner could come in to give a boost to this defense that was split more often than usual last season.

However, there's still lots of work to be done. Gardiner looks very attached to his former team. It is hard to believe that after 21 days, no team has offered a contract to the left-handed defenseman. Last season, Gardiner recorded three goals and 27 assists for a total of 30 points in 62 games.
