Toronto invites former Philly goalie to training camp

july 22, 2019
Frederik Andersen is the clear number one goaltender in Toronto. As for a clear number 2, that remains to be seen.

According to Bill Meltzer of, former Flyers goaltender Michael Neuvirth was approached by Toronto about a professional tryout contract for the team’s upcoming training camp. Despite training with Czech team Sparta, Neuvirth has accepted the try out.

A PTO does not guarantee a spot on the team once the regular season starts. Neuvirth would have to impress Toronto’s management enough at training camp to be offered a regular contract in order to join the team for the start of the regular season in October.

Neuvirth’s stats were nothing short of dismal with Philadelphia last season. He played in 7 games, winning just one of those. His GAA in those games was 4.27, while his save percentage was a lackluster .859.

Since being drafted by Washington in 2006, Neuvirth has played for the Caps, Buffalo and the New York Islanders, before signing a two-year contract with the Flyers in 2015. He was involved in a scary incident in April of 2017 when he collapsed on the ice during a game against New Jersey. He was taken to hospital, but all tests came back normal, according to the team.

As for Toronto, it appears the team is hoping that Michael Hutchinson will be the back up to Andersen, after a rough season by backup Garret Sparks last year. However, the Neuvirth PTO may be an attempt by the team to hedge its bet on Hutchinson.
