Yzerman makes several changes in Detroit's front office

august 17, 2019
Detroit GM Steve Yzerman has been a busy man. According to the team, he has made several changes to the Red Wings' front office. Perhaps the most notable name involved in the shake-up is four-time Stanley Cup winner Kris Draper, who has been promoted to director of amateur scouting. Draper has remained with Detroit since his retirement from hockey in 2011, serving as assistant GM to previous general manager Ken Holland.

In addition to this, Yzerman hired Ryan Rezmierski and Jesse Wallin and amateur chief scouts, two additional scouts in Bryce Thoma and Rob Rassey, and former Tampa Bay goaltending scout Phil Osaer was named head of goaltending scouting and development. Rezmierski served as a scout with the Nashville Predators for the last eight seasons, while Wallin, a first-round draft pick by the Red Wings in 1996, was a scout with the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues for the past six years and a former head coach of the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League.

Also, former team video coach Adam Nightingale was promoted to assistant coach after spending two years under head coach Jeff Blashill, ex-Carolina Hurricanes video coach LJ Scarpace was named the Wings' new video coach, and the team updated the titles of front-office staff Jiri Fischer (associate director of player personnel), Shawn Horcoff (director of player development/assistant director of player personnel) and Dan Cleary (assistant director of player development).

Yzerman was named GM of the Red Wings in April of this year, after serving eight years as GM in Tampa Bay. In 2015, Yzerman was awarded the NHL General Manager of the Year Award, becoming the first Lightning GM to receive the honour in team history.
