Signed, game-used Belfour equipment up for auction to benefit injured player

august 18, 2019
After leaving the NHL in 2007, goalie Ed Belfour signed a one-year contract with Leksands IF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). After finishing up that year, Belfour donated signed, game-used pads, a glove and a blocker to Leksand's youth team, who had a lost a teammate that year in a tragic fire. That team is now paying it forward by auctioning off the equipment to help out someone else.

The equipment, which can be viewed here, will be sold to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to the Tobias Forsberg Foundation. Forsberg, a former member of Leksands IF, crashed into the board in December of 2018, fracturing his neck in multiple places and suffering an injury to his spinal cord. As a result, Forsberg was paralysed below the chest and has limited function of his arms. The foundation was set up in his name to pay for his ongoing rehabilitation.

Belfour's 484 wins rank 4th all-time among NHL goaltenders. Over the course of his NHL career he won the Calder Trophy as that season's top rookie (1992), two Vezina trophies as the league's top goaltender (1991, 1993) and in 1999 he won his first and only Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of fame in 2011.
