Despite trade talk, Rasmus Ristolainen remains in Sabres' plans

august 18, 2019
It appears Buffalo Sabres GM Jason Botterill has no intentions of trading defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. In an interview with NHL.com, Botterill says Ristolainen remains in the team's plans moving forward and they want to put him in a better position to win.

"We continue to interact with 'Risto,' we're continuing to try to set this team up where we're putting Risto in positions to have success," Botterill told NHL reporter Heather Engel. "And, yeah, he wants to win, we also want to put him in a situation where he plays very well."

Ristolainen stirred trade talks earlier this month when he told a Finnish media outlet that he "cannot say anything other than the fact that on the 12th of September, I will be at one of the NHL team's training camps" and "I haven't been able to help the team win. Recent seasons have been tough and I haven't been able to enjoy hockey".

Despite this, Buffalo's new head coach Ralph Kruger is also planning for the season on the assumption that Ristolainen will be in the line-up.

"I really think it's important for me to listen when the players are talking to me, and the messages I received from him was, if I'm his coach, he's willing to do this and that and look for the next level of Rasmus Ristolainen," Krueger told NHL.com. "That's my job right now. He's in our lineup, he's on our roster, and I look forward to coaching him."
