Josh Bailey on pace to break an all-time Islanders record

october 8, 2019
In 2008, the New York Islanders used their 1st round selection (9th overall) to select Bowmanville, Ontario native, Joshua Bailey, who was coming off of a 96 point season in 67 games with the OHL's Windsor Spitfires. Bailey would go on to suit up in 68 games with the Islanders in the '08/'09 season, posting 7 goals and 25 points in what would be considered to be a good rookie season.

Fast forward to tonight's game as the Isles host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. As Bailey pulls the Isles sweater over his head, he will be doing so for the 800th time in his career. Most NHL players do not make it to the 800 game milestone, let alone playing all 800 games with the team that drafted them. Should Josh Bailey stay healthy and remain with the Islanders, he is on pace to pass Isles' great, Bryan Trottier and become the all-time leader for games played as a New York Islander.

"I'm very proud to have done it all here on the island. I feel like I've got a few more hundred left in me, so we'll see how it plays out.", Josh Bailey's comments on his forthcoming milestone.

Trottier holds the current record, having played 1,123 games in an Isles uniform. With Bailey's 800th game being tonight, the 30-year-old would need to play through 2022-2023, which is the 2nd last year on his current contract, in order to break Trottier's record. This would be an incredible feat, as it would certainly cement Bailey's legacy on the Island and put him among truly elite company.

Although Bailey does not stand a chance at reaching Trottier's 1425 points in 1279 games, Bailey, a fan favourite, has still managed to record 141 goals and 435 points in 799 games over 12 seasons on Long Island, in what has been a very respectable career to date.
