Bergevin aims to make sure Romanov is in Canada next season

october 9, 2019
Montreal GM Marc Bergevin wants prospect Alexander Romanov in Montreal next year and he's going through some great lengths to ensure that happens. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Bergevin will travel to Russia in December to meet with the 19-year-old defenseman in order to convince him not to re-sign with a team in the KHL.

Romanov was in Montreal over the summer to take part in a rookie training camp. It appears that he wants to be in Canada, but the Habs cannot officially negotiate a deal with him until the current KHL season ends, which is when his contract with CSKA Moscow runs out. It's been said often that the KHL does not like to give up their young prospects easily and will lean heavily on them to sign contract extensions to keep them in Russia.

Romanov was excellent at the World Junior Hockey Championships that took place last December and January. He managed eight points (one goals and seven assists) in seven games while winning a bronze medal with Russia. He was named the tournament's top defenseman by the IIHF Directorate and was voted to the tournament's All-Star team. In 15 games with CSKA Moscow this season, Romanov has three assists.

It's no secret the Canadiens could use some help on the blueline. Whether Bergevin can convince Romanov to make the jump to North America next season rather than re-signing in the KHL remains to be seen.
