Two-time Stanley Cup champ Zubov fired from coaching position

october 13, 2019
Sergei Zubov had an extremely successful NHL career. And, until recently, life after the NHL had been going well for him as well. Zubov has been fired from his head coaching position with HC Sochi of the KHL. He had just entered his third season.

The Hall-of-Fame defenseman (he will be inducted in December of this year) had lead HC Sochi to the Gagarin Cup playoffs the last two seasons, his first two has a head coach. However, this season saw a steep decline in the team's play. In 16 games, they have a record of five wins and 11 losses, which is why Zubov was let go.

The 49-year-old won a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994 and again with the Dallas Stars in 1999. He is widely regarded as one of the best offensive defenseman to ever play the game. He retired from the NHL in 2009, after playing 1068 career games. He finished with 771 points, including 152 goals. At the time of his retirement, he was the league's all-time scoring leader for Russian-born defensemen. The number one spot has since been taken over by Sergei Gonchar.
