Youth hockey coach reveals overtly racist message from parent

october 14, 2019
23-year-old hockey player and youth coach Talha Javaid says he was stunned after receiving a clearly racist message on his phone from a parent of one of the kids he coaches. The message is filled with xenophobic and racist language and, of course, starts with the line "I'm not racist but..."

Javaid, a native of Windsor, Ontario, posted the message and his response on Twitter. It has since gone viral with thousands of people offering their support for the coach.

The message, which we will post in its entirety below, tells Javaid that the parent isn't comfortable with him teaching his child hockey or the influence he will have on the child's life.

"It's hockey, right?," says the message. "It makes more sense if it's not some Muslim guy teaching it. If it was cricket or something that would be different, but it's not."

The message calls on Javaid to resign his position as coach as "it goes against tradition" and adds if he doesn't, the parent will consider pulling his child from the team.

Javaid's response, which he also posted, tells the parent (Chase, Riley's Dad) that his child is a good kid and a talented player and he should consider the influence he's having on his life with the racist thoughts and actions. Javaid is also staunch in his decision to not resign his position and tells the parent never to talk to him again about this subject.

Javaid tells Yahoo Canada Sports that he's overwhelmed by the outpouring of support he's received after posting the messages on Twitter. As a Pakistani-born Canadian Muslim, Javaid is one of the few people of colour in the hockey community in the Windsor-Detroit region. He has played ice hockey and ball hockey since he was a child. The Pittsburgh Penguins fan is a full time economics student at the University of Windsor. He volunteers as a hockey coach on weekends. His program has been running for less than a month.

Javaid adds he has never played cricket in his life and has no plans to do so.

Should Javaid have exposed Chase's full name?
