Marleau gets emotional after huge ovation in San Jose

october 14, 2019
Patrick Marleau was welcomed back to San Jose Sunday with a huge standing ovation from the crowd that left him teary-eyed and emotional. Marleau spent his first 19 seasons in the NHL with the Sharks before signing with Toronto as a free agent. After two seasons with the Maple Leafs, he was shipped to Carolina and the team bought him out of his contract's final year. It seemed like a given that he would return to San Jose, but the team made it clear over the summer they weren't interested. Then, after a slow start, the Sharks relented and signed the veteran to a one year contract. You can see his emotional return to SAP Centre below:

Marleau was the last player to skate out on the ice and the crowd was flooded with signs welcoming back one of the greatest players in franchise history.

"We've put on some weight, put on some gray hair, but, yeah, it's nice to have him back," said Sharks forward Joe Thornton.

The Sharks ended up beating Calgary 3-1. Marleau had an assist.
