TSN reporter draws backlash after defending Lucic

3 novembre 2019
TSN reporter Jermain Franklin's take on the Milan Lucic-Kole Sherwood incident is drawing some criticism from his Twitter followers. Franklin, who covers the Calgary Flames for TSN, wrote: "I didn't realize “roughing” was a suspendible offence. This type of decision implies Sherwood did nothing wrong. Open season on goaltenders?"

To be clear, any action can lead to a suspension if the league deems it excessive and/or an intent to injure an opponent. It doesn't matter what the call on the ice is or even if there is a call at all. It's also worth mentioning that Sherwood received a two minute penalty on the play for slashing Flames goaltender David Rittich, so he didn't go unpunished.

When called out for the assessment, Franklin did not back down, saying "I guess where we disagree is whether the player has a right to do it. I didn’t think it was a sucker punch because the kid probably should have realized retaliatory action would likely follow.

While there were a few people who agreed with his assessment, many others accused him of being biased, while at least a couple of responses referred to him as a "homer."

Lucic sucker punched Sherwood, of the Columbus Blue Jackets, in Saturday’s 3-0 Flames win. The punch was in response to Sherwood jabbing his stick at Flames goalie David Rittich looking for a rebound to a shot. After the initial punch, Lucic jumped Sherwood and attempted to land more punches before being pulled off by Columbus players. In suspending Lucic for two games, the NHL's Department of Player Safety says its decision was based on Sherwood not being given the chance to defend himself, adding Lucic and Sherwood were not engaged in mutual combat and revenge is not an excuse for illegal actions.
