Habs GM appears to be keeping a close eye on the Sharks

4 novembre 2019
Anyone who watches even a minimal amount of NHL hockey knows things aren't going well for the San Jose Sharks so far this season. The Sharks have a dismal 4-10-1 record right now, and if things don't start to turn around soon, the team may start looking at changes to the roster in order to right the ship. If this happens, it appears San Jose will have plenty of interest from Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin.

In a recent 31 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Habs are looking to add a left-shot defenseman. Following that revelation, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic wrote the following:
"It's interesting that Elliot Friedman mentions that the Canadiens are looking closely at left-handed defensemen. The Habs have sent recruiters regularly to Sharks games since the start of the season and we have a left-handed defender from Montreal."
Kurz is, of course, referring to Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the 32-year-old blueliner who has been a stalwart member of San Jose's defense core for more than 13 seasons now.

According to Kurz, Montreal sent two people to San Jose over the weekend to scout the San Jose-Winnipeg game, including Bergevin's right-hand man, assistant GM Scott Mellanby. If there is something in the works, it seems this would be the time to do it as San Jose may be ripe for the picking given the team's current situation. Everything would depend, obviously, on what the requested return might be.

It is also worth noting that Bergevin himself was in attendance at a home game of the AHL's Rockford IceHogs on Sunday, the affiliate team of the Chicago Blackhawks. Bergevin is a former assistant GM of the Blackhawks, so there is a relationship there. Who he may have been there to see is unknown at this point.

Visiting Montreal for the 110th anniversary celebration , former Canadian Saku Koivu mentioned, among other things, that in his view, the entry into the NHL of young Kotkaniemi, was too hasty.
