Former NHL first-round pick Scherbak finds a new team

5 novembre 2019
It's been a bumpy year for former NHL first-round draft pick Nikita Scherbak, but he appears to have landed on his feet once again. After leaving North America for the KHL during the latest offseason, Scherbak was recently released from a three-year contract with the KHL's Avangard Omsk. The two sides agreed to part ways after he was put on waivers. While small by NHL standards, his salary, the equivalent of $900,000 in US dollars per season, was quite lucrative for the Russian league. Just about a week after the collapse of his contract with Omsk, Scherbak has found a new home.

The former Montreal Canadien and LA King has signed a new deal with Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL. It will keep him with the team through the end of this current season. There's no word on what it is worth.

There were high hopes for Scherbak after he was drafted by Montreal 26th overall in 2014, but he only ever played 29 games for the team, spending most of his entry level contract years in the AHL. In December of 2018, the 23-year-old was placed on waivers by the Canadiens and was subsequently claimed by the Los Angeles Kings. Many felt a change of scenery would do him good, but he suited up in just eight games for LA, scoring one goal and no assists. On June 25th of this year, having completed his contract, Scherbak was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Kings, making him a free agent. The following day, Scherbak was officially signed to a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the KHL.

While he had two goals and six points in 16 KHL games this season with Avangard Omsk, word out of Russia was that Avangard was not happy with his play and head coach Bob Hartley saw no desire for progression in him.
