Friedman: Habs considered frontrunner for Okulov

5 novembre 2019
While a number of teams have been considered to be interested in the services of soon-to-be Russian free agent Konstantin Okulov, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman says he believes the Montreal Canadiens have the best chance of landing him at the end of this season. In his latest "31 Thoughts" article, Friedman writes:
The Karjala Cup is an international tournament beginning Thursday in Finland. There are at least two forwards closely watched by NHL teams: Finland’s Jesse Puljujarvi and Russia’s Konstantin Okulov...I could see Edmonton making a run at Okulov, even though Montreal is considered the front-runner.
Okulov is a 24-year-old C/RW playing for Moscow (Red Army) in the KHL, a team he's been with since the 2017-18 season. In 23 games this year, he has six goals and 14 points. Before that, he spent four seasons with Novosibirsk Sibir of the KHL, although he only played a handful of games in the first two, which isn't surprising considering would have been 18 to 19 at the time. His numbers have steadily improved, and he reached a career high in goals last season with 20, as well as points, with 31 in 48 games. Toronto has also been rumoured to be very interested in his services, as reported by Sportsnet in mid-October.

Last season, Okulov helped the Moscow club capture the KHL's Gagarin Cup with seven goals and 14 points in 19 playoff appearances.

Visiting Montreal for the 110th anniversary celebration , former Canadian Saku Koivu mentioned, among other things, that in his view, the entry into the NHL of young Kotkaniemi, was too hasty.
