Spezza's time in Toronto may be coming to an end

6 novembre 2019
According to TSN analyst Shawn Simpson, Jason Spezza won't be staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs much longer. Simpson says he's hearing the veteran will be placed on waivers when Zach Hyman returns to the Leafs' lineup, which should be soon.

Simpson adds that Spezza would be a perfect fit in Ottawa to serve as a mentor for young up-and-comers Logan Brown, Colin White and Joshua Norris. Not too mention that his minimum salary of $700,000 would make him very attractive to the Sens.

If Simpson is correct in his assessment, this would have to come as a blow to Spezza. He agreed to a one-year contract with Toronto this summer as a chance to play with his boyhood favourite team and, hopefully, have a shot at getting a Cup, or at least come close. However, it's been mentioned several times that while Leafs' GM Kyle Dubas was high on Spezza's signing, head coach Mike Babcock was anything but. Spezza has been in and out of the lineup since joining the club, and was benched for the team's home opener, something many fans criticized Babcock for, calling it a power trip and a petty move meant to assert his dominance.

In nine games this season, Spezza has one goals and three assists. Nothing spectacular, but not horrible for a fourth line centre making minimum salary.

Hyman has yet to play this season after undergoing knee surgery over the summer. Someone will have to go when he returns, as Toronto has no cap space at all, and having Hyman's $2.25 million back on the books will put the team well over the limit. The forward has been taking part in practice as an extra, but has not yet been given the green light to make his return.
