Video shows Humboldt bus crash victim is able to move his legs following experimental surgery

6 novembre 2019
Ryan Straschnitzki was left paralyzed from the waist down following last year's Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Since then, he has made significant steps in his recovery, and has even been able to compete in some sledge hockey games.

Last Saturday, he and his family departed to Thailand so Ryan could undergo spinal surgery. He has an epidural stimulator implanted in his spine, which can bring back certain functions such as muscle movement and bladder control. The surgery was performed this past Monday. His family stressed on Twitter that the surgery isn't experimental, it just isn't available in Canada at this point, even though it's been performed close to 100 times around the world.

In a video shared on Twitter by his family, Straschnitzki is seen lying on his back and moving his legs while doctors help him through the rehabilitation process.

"One time, Ryan almost kicked the therapist. Oops!," says the post. "The therapist is only holding his leg. Ryan is moving it. Then Ryan asks if he can go work out at the mall gym after. The stunned therapist said NO. You just had surgery. Seriously, son Ha Ha.

Check it out:

It's clear that Ryan can't wait to get back to being active, as his family shared another post on Twitter:

"Before he went in, he texted a guy out here about ice time for [Wednesday] Haha. What a kid." the post said.

We wish Ryan a speedy recovery, and can't wait to see him back on the ice!
