Don Cherry stands by his comments on Hockey Night in Canada

11 novembre 2019
While everyone from his employer, his co-host, to the league itself has issued an apology and/or a rebuke of Don Cherry's comments on Hockey Night in Canada regarding immigrants wearing poppies, Cherry himself is not budging. When contacted by the Toronto Sun asking if he regretted the comments or whether he would apologize, Cherry has this to day:

“I have had my say,” he told Joe Warmington. “It seems to have upset people. Like I said, Joe, you can put in that I said my piece and I will leave it there.”

Cherry's comments on Coach's Corner regarding immigrants not wearing poppies have set off a firestorm of backlash on social media with #firecherry trending long after the comments were made.

“You people love, that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life. You love our milk and honey. At least you can pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price," Cherry said.

While many, and it's likely safe to say most, agree with Cherry's take on wearing poppies, it's difficult to understand why he decided to single out one group of people. Both Sportsnet and the NHL have called Cherry's comments offensive and contrary to their beliefs. Co-host Ron MacLean issued an apology before a game Sunday night, saying Cherry was "flat-out wrong" in his assessment. His comments were also met with anger from Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

“For @CoachsCornerDC to say that “you people” do not respect our veterans is despicable. We’re proud of diverse cultural heritage and we‘ll always stand up for it. New immigrants enrich our country for the better. We’re all Canadians and wear our poppies proudly.”
