Zubov's number to be retired by Stars

11 novembre 2019
The Dallas Stars have announced they are retiring the number 56 of former defenseman Sergei Zubov. The ceremony will take place during the 2020-21 season. Zubov will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 18th of this year.

"I’m touched and it’s been an honour to play for this franchise for such a long time,” Zubov said in a video posted on the Stars’ Twitter account after being told his number was being retired.

Zubov played the final 12 seasons of his 16 year NHL career with Dallas, and also helped the team win its first and only Stanley Cup in 1999. He is the leader in all major categories for defenseman on the team, a three -time All-Star, and widely considered one of the best offensive defenseman to ever play in the NHL. He also won a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994. Not bad for a guy drafted in the fifth round by the Rangers in 1990.

Once Zubov’s number is retired, it will join Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8), Mike Modano (No. 9), Bill Masterton (No. 19) and Jere Lehtinen (No. 26) in the rafters of American Airlines Arena.

Visiting Montreal for the 110th anniversary celebration , former Canadian Saku Koivu mentioned, among other things, that in his view, the entry into the NHL of young Kotkaniemi, was too hasty.
