Cherry comments on his removal from Hockey Night in Canada

11 novembre 2019
Through all the commotion over the parting of ways between Sportsnet and Don Cherry, the man himself has taken the time to comment on his dismissal after 40 years in the broadcast industry. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Cherry seemed to have no regrets for what he said.

"I have just learned I’ve been fired by Sportsnet for comments made on Coach’s Corner Nov.ember 9th,” said Cherry. “No problem. I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.”

“To keep my job, I cannot be turned into a tamed robot,” said Cherry.

“I speak the truth and I walk the walk. I have visited the bases of the troops, been to Afghanistan with our brave soldiers at Christmas, been to cemeteries of our fallen around the world and honoured our fallen troops on Coach’s Corner. And it has been an honour to back the fighting men and women in uniform," he added.

Cherry did admit being fired on Remembrance Day "hurt." "I would have liked to continue doing Coach’s Corner. The problem is if I have to watch everything I say, it isn’t Coach’s Corner.”

Cherry's comments on Saturday night set off a firestorm of backlash on social media.

“You people... love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada," Cherry said.

Sportsnet announced earlier Monday that the hockey icon had been let go. This was after the network, the NHL and Coach's Corner co-host Ron MacLean all issued apologies and rebukes of his comments.
