KHL team makes pitch for Cherry's services

12 novembre 2019
Don Cherry on TV in Russia would certainly make for an interesting scenario. Dynamo Moscow of the KHL would like to see it happen. The team, one of the most successful ever in Russia, made a Twitter post telling Cherry he'd be the perfect fit as an analyst for the team, promising he could say whatever he wants.

"Hey, Don Cherry @CoachsCornerDC. We heard that you were fired. It’s not good! Come to Russia, we need an analyst for Dynamo TV who could talk whatever he thinks. We love old soldiers. And we will make a nice suit! We hope you agree."

It is somewhat ironic that a Russian team would attempt to cozy up to Cherry. The former broadcaster, who spent 40 years on television, hasn't had good things to say about the country, or its athletes, in the past.

"I’ve been trying to tell you people for so long about the Russians, what kind of people they are, and you just love them in Canada with your multiculturalism. They’re quitters and evidently they take a lot of drugs, too," Cherry said when two Russian skiers tested positive for drugs at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.

He also had very few nice things to say about Russian players during an intermission of a game between Team Canada and Team Russia at the 1996 World Cup, yelling that the Russian team sucked and have done nothing.

Cherry is currently unemployed after being pushed out of his position at Hockey Night in Canada for comments made on November 9th in reference to newcomers to Canada not wearing poppies.

“You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said Saturday night on the popular “Coach’s Corner” segment. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”
